Colour Crush puts color in the spotlight—not just as a visual phenomenon, but as a complex medium. Color has texture; it reflects and generates light; it resonates with space and surfaces. It conveys emotions, transforms atmospheres, and embodies cultural meanings, symbolic messages, and historical traditions.
Color takes center stage in the new exhibition at the Kunsthalle Nürnberg—not only as a visual phenomenon, but as a creative medium in its own right. Color is more than just a surface: it possesses materiality, reflects and generates light, and interacts directly with space and architecture. In Colour Crush, color appears as a space-defining medium: it shapes atmospheres, influences perceptual processes, and can trigger emotional reactions. At the same time, color refers to cultural meanings, symbolic contexts, and historical traditions. In an increasingly digitized world, Colour Crush deliberately focuses on the immediate, sensory experience of color, making its physical presence and emotional impact in space tangible.
The works from the years 1969 to 2005, borrowed from the Geiger Archive for Colour Crush, serve as a sounding board for current artistic positions. While Rupprecht Geiger primarily employs color as an immediate experience within a monochromatic field and without figurative references, the invited contemporary artists work with a variety of media and materials. Impressionistic layers of paint, large-scale installations, glass works, batik silk fabrics, and neon works demonstrate how color is used today to structure spaces, guide perception, and create atmospheres. Numerous works were developed specifically for this location and respond directly to the architecture of the eight skylight galleries at the Kunsthalle Nürnberg.
