The exhibition Capítulo VI, opening on September 20 at LagoAlgo, will present a selection of over 300 masks from the Muyaes collection, gathered in Mexico since the 1970s. These masks, used in rituals and festivities across various regions and historical periods, reflect the deep connection between cultural identity and ritual action. The exhibition proposes a dialogue between these practices and contemporary perspectives, questioning the relationships we establish with cultural objects rooted in popular traditions.
Artists like George Rouy, Nick Cave, Berenice Olmedo, Gabriel Rico, Naomi Rincón Gallardo, Pia Camil, and Yann Gerstberger will explore, through diverse mediums, how vernacular material and spiritual cultures can be reinterpreted in the present. By participating in collective rituals, the use of these masks enables the transformation of the body, erasing individual identity to merge into a shared experience.
